Another challenging situation to evaluate the health of citizen in the
single frame of development. This is one of the important aspects of human
being and this depends upon many other aspects of human development. The most
important positive correlation is between the good health and nutrition. Since
the period of independent till present time in India, the most daunting
challenge faced by India is to improve the health and nutrition status of the
poor, especially women.
This has been realized and accepted by the policy makers in India and
also at global level that, attaining development goal without the systematic
attention on health sector would be a distance dream. On the other hand, the
burden of health services falls disproportionately on the poor and burden is
augmented in such a proportional, which further deteriorate the gender equality
and encourages the unequal social status in the society.
There are many challenges in the health sector and many steps have been
taken to address the issues of health sector in India. But, this is still a
matter of inconsiderable fact that, why the health policy and its intervention
are not able to closely linked with the poverty, social justice and gender
issues? In the same way, the women health is either directly or indirectly
dependent on many factors ranging from social, cultural to economic.
However, India has achieved remarkable progress in social and economic
development in recent decades, even the improvement in health related
indicators such as life expectancy; infant mortality and women literacy
demonstrate this achievement. Despite of this remarkable achievement, India is
also one of the few countries, where sex ratio between man and women is not
positive and male outnumber women significantly, the maternal mortality rates
in rural are highest in the world. In general, this is also quite prevalent
here that woman experiences more episodes of illnesses than man and the
treatment of the illness is normally started when her illness is well advanced.
There are many socio
cultural as well as economic circumstances in relation with women health in
India and the challenges of health policy and its implementation further
aggravate the health related problem among women in India.
